As the inaugural Dean, this is an exciting opportunity for an individual to provide innovative, visionary leadership at a critical time in the history of both A-State and the veterinary medical profession
Arkansas State University is creating a College of Veterinary Medicine to serve the needs of our state and region. From A-State’s founding in 1909, the university has been an integral part of the agricultural fabric of the greater Delta region. The veterinary medicine project brings together the uniquely positioned resources of A-State with a distinct and growing need for veterinary practitioners
Arkansas State has a proven track record with innovative start-up projects, and the university will now build on that experience to effectively leverage its significant existing program and facility advantages in this latest initiative. The A-State advantages include:
A-State is a Carnegie Classification Research 2 national doctoral-granting university with the largest graduate enrollment of the state’s four-year universities
The campus is home to the first school of osteopathic medicine in the state, the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM), making our campus potentially the only one in Arkansas to co-locate veterinary and human medical schools
The on-site advantages of the College of Agriculture’s 240-acre University Farm which is a part of the A-State campus in Jonesboro. The CoA’s Agricultural Teaching and Research Center is home to several existing animal facilities, including a vibrant Equine Center, and will soon launch a new broiler poultry production research facility
A strong biological sciences background of research is taking place at the Arkansas Biosciences Institute at Arkansas State, which is currently partnering with NYITCOM faculty and anticipates the same opportunities with future A-State CVM faculty. A-State also has academic research programs connected to the USDA Agricultural Research Service, UA Division of Agriculture, and National Resources Conservation Service
Additional biological research labs and facilities are located within the College of Sciences and Mathematics, notably the Ecotoxicology Research Facility. A-State is also the national repository for DNA and other tissue samples for America’s most endangered wolf, the American Red Wolf, and is currently working toward establishment of a Red Wolf Conservation Center
