Cytotechnologist

Location: Trinity Health Ann Arbor
Th Cytotechnologist performs all necessary laboratory procedures pertaining to accessioning, technical preparation of cytologic specimens and initial evaluation of prepared slides from all body sites.
Required Education
Have graduated from a school of cytotechnology accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation or equivalent.
Certified in cytotechnology by a certification agency approved by HHS (ASCP preferred).
Experience
1-3 years cytology experience preferred.Skills/Knowledge
Demonstrates a mastery of the theories, principles and techniques involved in the area of specialization.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Demonstrates proficiency and understanding of all laboratory preparatory techniques necessary to produce cytologic specimens, including smears, and cell blocks.
Able to recognize and advise for corrective actions on sub optimally processed/prepared specimens.
Collects, accessions, and prepares GYN, Non Gyn, and FNA specimens.
Maintains quality control and maintenance records within the cytology lab section under direction of the Section Leader and/or Manager.
Evaluates all GYN, Non GYN, and FNA cytologic slides microscopically to determine the presence of cancer cells, infectious organisms, etc.
Identifies and marks all abnormal cells and presents these findings to a Pathologist for final evaluation.
Participates in the maintenance of the monthly cytology lab statistics.
Files and/or pulls slides for slide conferences, old case review, etc.
Document slide interpretation results for each gyn and non-gyn cytology case examined or reviewed.
Assists Pathologists in new techniques and/or procedures.
Assist in the training and supervise Anatomic Pathology Technician/supportive personnel.
Remains abreast of developments in cytology through self-study and seminar attendance.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships.
Approaches conflict in a constructive manner.
Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
