Job Description
The Nurse Epidemiologist contributes to the provision of high quality patient care by promoting and implementing infection
prevention, control practices and compliance with regulatory agency requirements. Through interdisciplinary and
collaborative actions, evaluates occupational health exposures/issues and assists with the determination of proper care and
planning related to infection prevention and control; participates in the identification, prevention and control of infections by
data collection, surveillance and analysis, development of verbal and written reports, educational programs for personnel and
patients as needed. Assists client departments in preparations for accreditation and licensure surveys in both the acute and
ambulatory care areas as well as other regulatory standard reviews.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
•Conducts targeted surveillance for infections related to medical devices, surgeries, and organisms of significant
epidemiological significance.
•Applies surveillance definitions and methodologies to identify, evaluate, and report infections in patients and healthcare
workers.
•Reports communicable diseases and supporting laboratory data to the local, state and national health departments as
required.
•Monitors and coordinates isolation precautions and infection control practices in patient care areas.
•Uses epidemiologic methods and surveillance data to evaluate current infection control practices and quality improvement
action plans.
•Evaluates surveillance systems for sensitivity and specificity to ensure resource requirements are sufficient for the various
approaches of surveillance.
•Conducts investigations of clusters of nosocomial infections, outbreaks, and exposures using investigative techniques as
directed by Hospital Epidemiologist.
•Provides in-service education for the medical center, general orientation, and as needed training.
•Participates in hospital and department committees to contribute, advocate, promote infection control practices and
patient safety.
•Assists with planning, development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and revision of Infection Prevention and
Control Program goals, standards, policies and procedures.
•Evaluates accreditation and regulatory issues and uses industry resources and guidelines to facilitate organizational
compliance with infection control measures.
•Collaborates with unit and department leadership in quality/performance improvement and patient safety activities
related to infection prevention and control.
Qualifications
Education
Assoc. Degree/College Diploma Associate's in Nursing - Required
BSN or Masters in Science in Nursing Public Health - Preferred
Work Experience
2 years Experience in infection prevention in a hospital setting - Preferred
5 years Registered Nurse experience in acute or clinical setting - Required
License Requirements
California State RN License
BCLS Certification
