Job Description
Duties: This is a contract position with no state benefits.
The Sign Language Interpreter - Northern Sector will provide on-site ASL interpretation at seven correctional facilities for deaf and hard-of-hearing inmates in the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Correction. Situations in which interpretative services will be provided include (but are not limited to) educational programming, religious programming, disciplinary and inmate grievance proceedings, and inmate meetings and interviews. This position will also require the translation of written materials which may be recorded for future use. The interpreter will also perform other duties as assigned, including assisting the Department with the preparation of materials for deaf and hard-of-hearing inmates and tracking of data related to interpretation and translation services. Responsibilities may also include interpretation during meetings and presentations.
This position requires travel to the following institutions: MCI-Concord, MCI-Framingham, MCI-Shirley, North Central Correctional Institution (Gardner, MA), Northeastern Correctional Center (Concord, MA), Souza Baranowski Correctional Center (Shirley, MA), and to Department Headquarters in Milford, MA. Depending on administrative and operational need, travel may also be required to Department facilities located in Boston, Roslindale, Bridgewater, South Walpole, Norfolk, and Plymouth, MA.
This is a contract position, with a guaranteed 20 hours of work per week. The pay rate for this position is $70.00 to $83.00 per hour based on experience. No state benefits are provided for this contract position.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with interpretation in legal contexts, certification in legal interpretation, and/or training or course work in legal interpretation is preferred. Prior work experience in a prison environment is strongly preferred.
Comments:
Applicants must have no felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609. The Massachusetts Department of Correction shall not hire anyone who may have direct contact with offenders, who has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph. The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents. The DOC urges bi-lingual applicants to apply.
Qualifications
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must (a) have a valid, current certification from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, the National Association of the Deaf, or equivalent certification; and/or (b) be screened and approved by the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License is required.
