The Office of Children and Families (OCF) aligns the City’s policies, resources, and services for children and families. Our priorities are:
Safe children Strong families Supported schools and communities OCF administers a number of City supported programs, including Out-of-School Time, Community Schools, PHLPreK and Adult Education. The Office also oversees the Department of Human Services (DHS), Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, the Free Library of Philadelphia.
The Communications department helps internal and external audiences understand OCF services and programs. Some primary functions of the office include: Public Relations and crisis communications Engage users with OCF social media presence Support OCF advertising efforts Publish performance management reports Ensure branding and graphic standards are followed and consistent throughout the office Respond to media requests Job Description The Communications Specialist supports the public relations, digital communications, and community engagement efforts of the Office of Children and Families (OCF). This employee will report to the Communications Director and work closely with program staff, partner organizations, and other City departments to promote and support OCF activities. These activities include, but are not limited to, PHLpreK, Community Schools, Adult Education, Philadelphia Reading Coaches, and Foster Grandparents.
Essential Functions
Assists in managing the OCF social media strategy by drafting, scheduling, and monitoring social media content (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, NextDoor). Assists in executing paid social media advertising campaigns as needed and tracking analytics. Prepares content such as blogs and alerts for phila.gov/families and other departments within the OCF portfolio. Processes communications requests from program staff. Oversees email marketing including content creation and list management, including the dissemination of a monthly newsletter. Monitors two OCF Communications email boxes and distributes emails for appropriate responses. Assists with drafting public statements, talking points, speeches, and press releases for OCF leadership and/or the Mayor’s Office. Assists in coordination of press conferences and events. Oversees press clipping and identifies clips that should be promoted on social media. Manages shared calendars for events and publications across all services and programs. Manages special projects such as annual reports. Assists in procurement of promotional collateral. Other duties as assigned. Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
2-4 years of experience, including internships, in media relations, digital strategy, and/or communications. Spanish language skills, conversational and/or written, strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of WordPress, MailChimp, and MS Office Suite. Experience drafting content for social media. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite a plus. Work-Life
Working hours are generally 37.5 hours per week, but could vary due to special circumstances or crisis situations. Our team is currently hybrid with both virtual and in-office days, however the position can opt to come in the office each day if desired.
Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required
