Job Summary:Under the general direction of the Registrar, the Collections Technician designs and oversees the environmental and integrated pest management plans for the museum. The Technician is also responsible for the cleaning and assessment schedules for the permanent collection and loan objects both on view and in storage, which includes artwork condition assessments, maintenance activities, and repairs. They coordinate with colleagues across museum departments to ensure the safety, hygiene, and longevity of all collection and loan holdings.

Minimum Qualifications:
One to three years of experience working with art objects or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.Working knowledge of the equipment, materials, and techniques used in the preservation of art objects, conservation of art, and the proper handling of valuable objects, delicate instruments, and hazardous materials.Familiarity with OSHA guidelines for safety and material handling as well as fluency with Safety Data Sheets.Advanced knowledge of Integrated Pest Management methods, gallery maintenance, and environmental monitoring.Able to identify issues and areas of improvement, research plausible solutions, and present findings and suggestions.Must possess a valid drivers license and the ability to pass a Security Threat Assessment as issued by the Department of Homeland Security.Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.Able to respond promptly and calmly in emergency situations.Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, perspective, and a strong work ethic supported by commitment and follow-through.Ability to work within and support a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees.Desired Qualifications:
Experience establishing an archive and/or records management program within a museum environment or nonprofit organization.Knowledge of retention policies and schedule for cultural or nonprofit institutions.Experience with collections database software.Understanding of Honolulu Museum of Arts established identity and dedication to advancing it.Essential Duties:
Organizes the regular cleaning and maintenance of collection objects and exhibition furniture, notably outdoor sculpture and works stored or exhibited outside.Regularly updates documentation such as the museum housekeeping and integrated pest management guidelines and policies, as well as relevant parts of the overall collections management policy.Coordinates and maintains the Integrated Pest Management plan for museum galleries, working with Facilities staff as necessary.Regularly updates Integrated Pest Management materials and coordinates with local pest management companies to preserve the Museums collection and buildings.Maintains gallery and storage environmental equipment including dehumidifiers, environmental data loggers, and hygrothermographs.Monitors and reviews environmental alarms and notifi s appropriate departments and contractors in the event of an outage.Recommends environmental changes to the Registrar and Collections Manager based on monitoring and interpretation of temperature and relative humidity.Remains informed on safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals for collections-adjacent equipment.Assists with the handling of art objects, including oversized and/or weighted objects, and the return of artwork to proper storage in accordance with museum best practices.Other duties as assigned, including occasional exhibition installation and preparatory work as needed.CompensationThe Honolulu Museum of Art is committed to practicing salary transparency. The minimum salary for this position is $20.00 per hour and the maximum salary is $23.00 per hour. Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. The Collections Technician may be required to monitor equipment or respond to emergency situations in the evening or on the weekend.Ability to operate general office equipment including computer, copier, printers, fax machine, etc. Ability to lift, carry, push, and shelf objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. This position requires the ability to stand for long periods and repeatedly bend, stoop, or stretch.
