Bloomberg News is seeking a cartographer with expertise using remote sensing, satellite imagery and other geospatial methods to conduct analysis for maps and news stories. Working with the Bloomberg News Data Visualization team, you'll conduct analysis and create visual stories for breaking news, ongoing news coverage, and enterprise and investigative stories across platforms and devices.
Leveraging your expertise in geospatial analysis, you'll help break news and investigate topics of importance to Bloomberg readers. Our team is highly collaborative and we value people who are motivated to work with others and pitch in as news events unfold - both planned and unplanned. We're a group of journalists who encourage each other and share our ideas and knowledge - we'll expect you to be a supportive and engaging member of the team.
WE'LL TRUST YOU TO:
Use remote sensing analysis, image processing and machine learning to analyze geospatial datasets for visual storytelling Apply your skills and curiosity in collaboration with team members and newsroom colleagues in ideating, researching, designing and writing visual stories that can be fast-moving or long-term Develop reproducible workflows for data collection and analysis, or build simple tools to streamline workflows, that can be utilized by other team members Maintain documentation and repositories of data sources for specific geospatial tasks that the team can leverage in their reporting Work with other designers on the team to define/improve mapping style guides and base maps Share your expertise; brainstorm ideas with team members and support them as they conduct geospatial analysis
YOU'LL NEED:
Experience with remote sensing analysis, machine learning and computer vision techniques for analyzing satellite imagery and work with other geospatial data types Experience automating geospatial workflows, including data collection, analysis and dataset generation Experience with tools, programming languages and libraries used for geospatial analysis, e.g. Google Earth Engine, GDAL, Python, R, QGIS Interest in topics core to Bloomberg News coverage, and an eagerness to work within a news context (contributing to reporting and visualization creation processes)
WE'D LIKE YOU TO HAVE (BUT NOT REQUIRED):
