  ABOUT THE POSITION

  The Clark County Building Department is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Building Permit Specialist I/II position. This position provides specialty support and interaction with applicants on the processing of building permit applications and related services. Performs various functions including receiving plans and reports, scheduling inspections, issuing permits, calculating and collecting fees, setting up applications, assembling completed/approved construction drawing and maintaining related documents.

  Building Permit Specialist I: $21.69 - $33.58 Hourly

  Building Permit Specialist II: $23.37 - $36.27 Hourly

  The Building Permit Specialist I is a training underfill position, upon successful completion of the training program the successful candidate will be non-competitively promoted to Building Permit Specialist II.

  This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months at either level or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

  ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

  Clark County Building Department is dedicated to providing construction and development customers with state-of-the-art permit management, plan review and inspections services for residential and commercial construction. The Building Department is responsible for ensuring public safety through the effective enforcement of development and construction standards which include issuance of permits, plan reviews, and inspection services. As part of Clark County, the Building Department is a dynamic and innovative organization dedicated to providing top-quality service with integrity, respect, and accountability. As the famed Las Vegas Strip sits at the heart of Clark County featuring unparalleled attractions like dancing fountains, a replica of the renowned Eiffel Tower, and some of the world's largest and most beautiful resorts, the Building Department is an integral part of the building industry and economic growth within Clark County.

  MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  Education and Experience: Building Permit Specialist I - Equivalent to graduation from high school AND three (3) years of full-time clerical experience preferably in a building construction, zoning, plan review or similar setting. College level training in pre-engineering or construction technology is desirable. Professional level experience and/or education that has provided the skills and knowledge necessary to perform all job functions at this level may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to one (1) year.

  Building Permit Specialist II – In addition to the above, two (2) years of full-time clerical experience preferably in a building construction, zoning, plan review or similar setting, one (1) of which includes experience in receiving plans, calculating and collecting fees and providing support to a building permit or similar development activity.

  Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application. Do not substitute a resume for your application or write "see attached resume" on your application.

  Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

  Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

  EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  Provides information regarding building permitting and basic plan review processes and procedures to developers, contractors, property owners and the public at a service counter or over the telephone. Receives plans and other building documents for review; ensures proper approvals, ensures that they are complete and contain required information for submittal and review; tracks plans after submittal for the review process. Calculates required plan review and inspection fees, collects funds and issues receipts and balances monies received on a daily basis. Informs customer how to schedule building inspections via the computer-generated scheduling system. Reviews plans for permit application; ensures that required subsidiary permits and documentation is received prior to permit issuance. Performs difficult, complex technical and/or specialized office support work, which may require the exercise of independent judgment, the application of technical skills and a knowledge of detailed or specialized activities related to the Building. Uses a computer to enter plan submittal data and develop and manage databases and/or spreadsheet files and report formats. Researches and assembles information from a variety of sources for the completion of forms or the preparation of reports regarding the building permit process. Verifies approval of required inspections, other department or agency clearances and special conditions before issuing Certificates of Occupancy. Routes plans to required departments and agencies for review; tracks review status. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team. Uses standard office equipment, including a computer and microfilm and microfiche equipment, in the course of the work. May train others in work procedures or direct the work of others on a project or relief basis.

  PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
