Position Title: Broadcast Systems Engineer
Position Reports To: Sr. Director, Broadcast Systems
Position Summary: This is a wide-ranging position contributing to the department that supports every system involved in keeping MLB Network on the air, from signal acquisition to affiliate delivery and everything in between. The ideal candidate will have a very strong ability to self-learn, a tenacity for evaluating and improving, an exceptional talent for troubleshooting, and an understanding of high availability broadcast systems design.
Responsibilities: Specific responsibilities include support and maintenance of:
24/7 On Call Support, Maintenance, and Incident Response of:
Master Control, playout, and automation infrastructure. Downlink and uplink satcom systems. Inbound and outbound terrestrial network systems. Offsite disaster recovery systems. Encryption/Blackout management systems. Live production event transmission. Take ownership of assigned vendor issues until full resolution. Generate and maintain documentation of all above systems. Generate and maintain engineering procedures and workflows. Management of assigned projects and timelines. Other duties as assigned. Skills & Experience: The ideal candidate must have most if not all of the following skills and experiences:
5+ years of experience with the following: Excellent troubleshooting and triage skills across multiple technical domains while under time and resource constraints. Demonstrate the tact, diplomacy, decisiveness, and superior people skills required in the pressurized environment of live television. Ability to communicate effectively and asynchronously. Ability to adapt quickly and maintain momentum as priorities change. Self-motivated and self-reliant with a demonstrable enthusiasm for technical discovery. Confident in self instruction when presented with a new technology. Ability to evaluate software and hardware against requirements. Successfully work through difficult problems with limited oversight. Ability to analyze complex signal flow issues. Ability to clearly and concisely present actions, findings, and recommendations both verbally and in writing, sometimes to non-technical personnel. Demonstrable sense of urgency and caution appropriate for working on running systems focused on redundancy and uptime. Ability to create and maintain meticulous documentation. Effectively collaborate with fellow engineers. Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required. An in depth understanding of: Video compression standards (MPEG2, H.264/AVC, HEVC). Video transmission protocols/formats (MPEG2 transport stream, SCTE35, ASI, RTP, SRT, RIST). Satellite/RF transmission and reception concepts (Carrier, Transponder, EIRP, Eb/No, Spectrum Analyzer, IRD). IT and Network technology concepts (IP routing/switching, multicast routing, protocol analysis, server management). Packet and signal capture analysis. Uncompressed Digital Video (HD-SDI, 3G, SCTE104, SCTE224). Database concepts, SQL statements. Systems telemetry monitoring, alerting, observability, and automation. Linux experience (server configuration, shell scripting, log analysis, Python) a plus. AutoCAD documentation experience a plus. Must be able to lift equipment weighing up to 60 pounds and work effectively in cramped spaces. Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions. Ability to climb stairs and ladders. Possess the manual dexterity to effectively operate keyboard/mouse on computers, and other equipment, etc. Possess the visual acuity needed to effectively deliver required work product. Possess the auditory acuity needed to effectively deliver required work product. Ability to sit or stand for sufficient lengths of time in order to effectively deliver required work product. Education: Bachelor’s degree in broadcast technology/engineering or equivalent related experience.
