SUMMARY: The Bilingual Teaching Fellow program is a Grow-Your-Own teaching pathway designed for paraeducators who are proficient in one of our target languages (Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali) to earn a Bachelor's in Education and teaching certification. Fellows work in elementary school settings *while *taking courses with Western WA University in the evening. This program is two years long and prepares students to work as Dual Language teachers in elementary schools. Fellows will start taking university classes in June 2024 and start working as a Fellow in elementary schools in September 2024. Under the guidance of a mentor teacher, the Fellow provides individual and group instruction to MLL students in the Dual Language school target language using standards and assessments to plan for instruction. The Fellow serves as a liaison between the school and families, provides interpretation services for non-English speaking families and school staff; and leads/develops family engagement activities for the bilingual community.
Candidates must be admitted, enrolled and maintain good standing with Western Washington University throughout the duration of the program.Preference for seats in this program are prioritized for pre-existing employees of Highline Public SchoolsEmployees do not need to be/have been bilingual paraeducators to be eligibleCandidates/Employees must meet language proficiency requirements as a component of the hiring process.
