The Behavioral Health Nurse Recruiter is a five-year grant-funded position at the South Dakota Human Services Center. The position will work closely with the University of South Dakota to create a worker-centered partnership around the nursing workforce to improve education, enhance good quality jobs, and address issues contributing to the nursing workforce shortage, especially in mental health.
The position will improve training to provide nursing students with a more comprehensive understanding of behavioral health nursing, redesign mental health clinical and preceptor experiences, explore student barriers entering the nursing profession, and develop a plan to address barriers. This position will engage with healthcare stakeholders and educational institutions in adopting and deploying training for high-demand nursing positions with an emphasis on mental health. The candidate will place students into clinical experiences at the South Dakota Human Services Center and work with other behavioral health facilities for clinical opportunities.
This position works primarily from 08:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday- Friday, but hours may be adjusted to accommodate travel, job fairs, recruiting events, and community engagement activities.

This position is grant-funded through the University of South Dakota, which will commence on June 1, 2023, and end on May 31, 2028. The starting annual salary for the position is $70,549 and has a built-in annual cost of listing salary adjustment. The job includes South Dakota state benefits, including health insurance and retirement.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must be licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the State of South Dakota.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Preference will be given to BSN.
Knowledge of:
state and federal statutes related to mental health and chemical dependency;
CMS guidelines and regulations;
Mental Health and Chemical Dependency services available in South Dakota;
effective methods of supervision including staff orientation, development, training and work direction;
professional nursing theory;
current nursing practice;
clinical procedures;
psychiatric and medical disorders.
