The Boeing Company's AvionX organization is seeking a Chief Engineer for our internally developed Boeing Flight Management Systems (BFMS) avionics product line. This position is located in either Long Beach, CA or Mesa, AZ. The chief engineer for BFMS is responsible for leading a team hardware and software engineers in the development of a new organic flight management system for Boeing commercial aircraft. The flight management system performs navigation, lateral and vertical flight planning, aircraft performance computations, guidance and displays management functions. The Chief Engineer will directly support BFMS Program Leadership while reporting directly to the AvionX Engineering Executive, and serve as a member of the BFMS core leadership team, supporting the Program Manager in vision creation and strategy execution.
The BFMS Chief Engineer leads a geographically diverse engineering workforce to achieve technical excellence throughout the product development lifecycle applying an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop integrate, validate, and verify hardware. Successful job performance depends upon balancing creativity, executability and safety of flight while meeting cost and schedule goals. You will drive first-time quality through extensive application of Model-based Engineering (MBE), virtual verification and validation (V&V), and Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP). You will develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, and partnering organizations for on-going and new business product developmentof the highest importance to The Boeing Company.

Position Responsibilities:
Manages end-to-end product development, spanning all aspect of the product life-cycle: from product concept inception strategy, requirements definition, product development, design, testing, certification, product delivery and to post-delivery support
Lead a geographically diverse and multi-national engineering workforce team in 5 primary states and 5 international locations to achieve technical excellence throughout the BFMS product development lifecycle applying an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop integrate, and validate and verify hardware
Establish a culture of proactive cross-functional technical oversight, risk management and rapid issue resolution, providing alternative paths for issue resolution and open and honest dialogue on technical issues across all functions
Serve as technical authority on applicable BFMS and AvionX engineering boards. Lead and/or approves root cause and corrective action (RCCA) activities. Manages design changes and configuration control as well as creation, establishment and execution of design processes
Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, and partnering organizations for on-going and new business product development
Responsible for quality and operational excellence of the BFMS product to drive first-time quality through extensive application of Model-based Engineering (MBE), virtual verification and validation (V&V), and Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP)
This position is hybrid. This means that the selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options. This is at the hiring team's discretion and could potentially change in the future. Note-the selected candidate can anticipate working 3 days onsite, 2 days remote, per week in this role.
This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret clearance Post-Start is required.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
5+ years of experience working in an engineering leadership position
5+ years of experience with avionics systems new product development or production
5+ years of experience with Avionics Hardware & Software development, design, production and project management
5+ years of experience executing quality requirements on Commercial or Major DOD programs
Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% of the time both domestically and internationally
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Engineering / Technical degree in a relevant field. (e.g. Electrical/electronic engineering, systems engineering, or software engineering)
Experience building of cross-functional relationships; experience connecting with and advising senior leaders within the business and thoughtfully challenging leadership when necessary
Experience in working with teams to execute to safety, quality, delivery & cost commitments, and utilizing production systems
Experience leading through influence and partnering with cross-functional teams on projects, transactions or initiatives
Experience working with internal and external customers and suppliers
Certification experience (for commercial or DoD product certification, preferably both)
Proven record of avionics or electronics product execution/delivery
A strong, influential leadership style that moves people to act, motivates and inspires excellence and innovation
Experience in building strong teams
Ability to lead in a matrixed, complex organization and empower and motivate large, diverse, cross-functional teams towards difficult and complex technical challenges
Strong communication skills and ability to work with global teams and collaborate across geographic locations
Experience in program management and product quality management
Typical Education/Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 20 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+15 years' related work experience, Master+18 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary Pay Plan: $174,250 - $251,850
