Associate Editor/Investigations
The Austin American-Statesman is hiring an Associate Editor to lead long and short-term investigations of impact. This is a new position, a dream job based in Austin, the 10th largest city in the country and growing.
The reporting team here is hungry, sharp, dedicated, and will not be outhustled. Our AE is equally hungry and cooks with gas.
We want the best: a journalist with a proven track record of investigative victories, an unselfish leader, who lifts others, and guides the team to bring about change, expose sham and improve lives.
The AE role allows for said editor to be a player-coach and take a direct hand in pitching and producing investigations, as well as working with our talented journalists on projects.
It is not uncommon for Statesman editors to produce content. The AE will lead a team of reporters, based on the project that is greenlighted.
What else are we looking for?
The post requires the skills to edit artfully and tight, a writer's touch for clarity, discipline to manage complex or fast-moving investigations with grace and a collaborative spirit. A knowledge of data analysis, navigating public records and working with our legal team is important. The skill to guide a project across platforms, via documentary, podcast, in multiple languages, by working with cross-teams is necessary.
Location, opportunity, fun.
Austin, and Central Texas, provide unprecedented opportunities for ambitious journalism. We are the seat of power for state government, home to the University of Texas at Austin, a global technology hub and burgeoning medical center, a region where billions of dollars in public money is being spent on every kind of project imaginable and in need of watchdogs. Government routinely tries to block or obfuscate transparency, and that is when we step in.
The #MightyStatesman brand.
The #MightyStatesman is riding a wave of unprecedented journalistic success. This year, the Statesman won a national Edward R. Murrow Award, the second time in three years, earned the Taylor Family Award for Fairness in Journalism from Harvard University, and was recognized as a Pulitzer Finalist in Public Service for its meritorious work to expose the failed response by law enforcement during the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.
The Statesman is a talent hub, home to the best on their beats from football to dinning to entertainment, education, politics, business, and a diverse newsroom of journalist.
The Associate Editor will report to the Executive Editor with dotted responsibilities to our Managing Editor/News.
