The University of Miami School of Law has a great opportunity for an Associate Director / J.D. Advisor to work at the Coral Gables Campus.
The Associate Director, Career Services provides guidance in areas of personal and professional development for students in the assigned program(s) and facilities. Moreover, the Associate Director, Career Services oversees the planning, development, and administration of career and employment assistance programs for students.
Core Job Functions:
Partners with local organizations to develop employment, internship, or co-op opportunities for students and alumni.
Oversees the management and dissemination of current information regarding educational opportunities and community mentor initiatives.
Provides individual counseling to students and graduates regarding career planning and job searches, including self-assessment, resume and cover letter review, interview preparation, professional skills development, and career research and options.
Creates and presents variety of career programs and workshops.
Plans events to facilitate networking opportunities with employers and build networking skills for students.
Assists with the collection and reporting of information, statistics, and data on an ongoing basis and for various annual reports.
Serves as liaison to student organizations and faculty members.
Participates in the creation of handouts, marketing materials, and other resources.
Contributes to the long-range planning and goals of the department.
Department Specific Responsibilities:
Career Advisor for J.D. Students and Alumni
Maintain daily counseling appointments available to J.D. students and alumni to discuss potential career paths, job search strategies and resources, salary negotiations, and a variety of other job-related matters.
Counsel J.D. students and alumni regarding resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, and networking techniques. Review resumes, cover letters and other application materials.
Present workshops on topics related to job search strategies and current market trends.
Conduct mock interviews. Evaluate students’ performance and provide constructive feedback.
Collect and assist in the accurate reporting of graduate employment data as required by the American Bar Association and National Association for Law Placement.
Liaison to Tax and Estate Planning LL.M. Programs and Advisor to LL.M. Students
Serve as liaison to domestic Tax and Estate Planning LL.M. Programs. Maintain regular communication with program directors.
Provide advising to Tax and Estate Planning LL.M. students regarding resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, and networking techniques. Review resumes, cover letters and other correspondence.
Identify and promote employment opportunities LL.M. students; ensure timely communication of opportunities to students and facilitate smooth application processes.
Assist with coordination of and attend programming for LL.M. students including employment related lectures, new student orientations, and job fairs.
Maintain data on employment outcomes for domestic LL.M. students and alumni.
Recruitment and Marketing
Assist with the day-to-day operation of the Fall and Spring Recruiting Programs, including handling student inquiries.
Assist with creating bi-weekly newsletter to students.
Attend alumni, bar association, and other organizations’ functions to create networks with local attorneys and other professionals affiliated with the legal industry.
Collaborate with various law school programs and offices, faculty, student leaders, student organizations, bar associations and others to create and support career and professional development programming and opportunities for law students.
Assist in developing and deploying strategies for promoting Miami Law students and alumni in the job market. Engage with employers who recruit Miami Law candidates through its recruiting programs and other initiatives. Assist in cultivating relationships with new employers to create additional employment opportunities in new geographic markets, areas of practice, and industries.
Maintain active membership in the South Florida Association for Law Placement and National Association for Law Placement.
Office Administration
Perform other duties including indirect supervision of student workers and special projects assigned by the Assistant Dean.Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field. Juris Doctor degree is highly preferred and a minimum of four years post-graduate work experience are required. Must possess considerable understanding of U.S. legal system.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
