  The School of Law has an exciting opening for an Assistant Dean for Development and External Relations. This is a full-time permanent position.

  The Assistant Dean for Development and External Relations (Chief Advancement Officer) develops and oversees the implementation of a comprehensive Advancement program. The Assistant Dean for Development and External Relations will collaborate with and serve as a member of the Dean’s senior leadership team and will report jointly to the Dean of the School of Law and the Vice President for Development, as aligned in the University of Washington’s integrated advancement model.

  This position provides comprehensive direction for the School of Law’s advancement efforts, by providing leadership that supports the mission, strategic plan priorities, objectives and fundraising goals for the School of Law. This role is responsible for the programs, activities and initiatives that attract private philanthropy, enhance relationships with key internal and external constituencies locally, nationally and internationally, and promote volunteerism on behalf of the School.

  What You Will Do: Leadership and Team management (30%)

  •Provide leadership and manage the School of Law’s Advancement and External Affairs team.•Manage a team of professionals who build and maintain strong and mutually beneficial relationships between the School (its Dean, faculty, students and staff) and external audiences such as donors, alumni, bar associations, law firms, and business and community leaders.•Provide program leadership, direction and guidance to Advancement and external Affairs team, including day to day operations and budgetary oversight.

  Strategy Development (20%)

  •Establish long- and short-term fundraising strategies for the School’s overall advancement activities. Provide guidance and regular evaluation of fundraising programs; major and principal giving strategies; assess progress toward goals; and report on results to the Dean and Vice President for Development. Ensure fundraisers are focused on effective prospective donor engagement strategies and are accountable to UW Advancement’s established protocols and metrics.•Integrate and jointly coordinate marketing and engagement efforts with central advancement teams.

  Fundraising (30%)

  •Develop a focused set of core fundraising priorities that advance the mission and strategic direction of the School of Law.•Work collaboratively with central advancement teams to secure planned giving, principal giving, corporate and foundation and annual giving support to grow the philanthropic pipeline for the School.•Personally manage a portfolio of major gift prospective donors ($50,000+), providing support and ensuring strong relationships for the School. Develop and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies for each assigned prospect based on established metrics.

  Program Development (10%)

  •Direct and manage all aspects of the School of Law's advancement program, including annual gifts, major and planned gifts, corporate and foundation support, donor recognition and stewardship, alumni services and programs, advancement-focused communications and publications and general external relations activities.•Coordinate and oversee the Advancement and External Affairs team’s interaction with volunteer committees and boards, including the Leadership Council and its committees.•Develop and implement a communications plan that promotes private fundraising priorities and objectives of the School of Law, including direct communications, collateral and event strategy (e.g. reunions, tailgate events, PILA auction, 125th anniversary, distinguished lectures and community discussions).

  Campaign Planning (10%)

  •Orchestrate campaign planning including feasibility, infrastructure development, volunteer officer identification/recruitment, prospect prioritization, internal communication and coordination, and case definition and positioning in support of the School of Law and in alignment with the University’s priorities and strategic plan.

  Other duties as assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  A bachelor’s degree and at least eight to ten years of progressively responsible experience in institutional development/advancement, with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting major gifts.

  Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. What You Bring:

  •Ability to create a strategic vision and execute upon it. Proactive and self-motivated with the energy and a capacity to work hard within an intensely goal-oriented environment.•Experience managing and developing staff with a demonstrated track record as a successful fundraiser in a complex higher education setting. Comprehension of fundraising techniques and principles derived from programs like PlusDelta Partners.•Ability to understand and articulate academic values within the legal professional environment, and work collaboratively with law faculty, administration, staff, law students, bar associations, judges and alumni.•Ability to coordinate, enable and build upon the work of a volunteer fundraising group.•Ability to analyze data to make strategic decisions and measure outcomes. Ability to identify issues, propose solutions and execute plans with meaningful results. Ability to initiate, organize and follow-up.•Demonstrated strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.•Strong personnel and budget management experience or ability.

  DESIRED:

  An advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred.

  What You Can Expect:

  •Availability to work during normal business hours in-person plus the ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice.•Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and willing to travel when necessary.•Frequent local, regional and international travel expected.
