About the Department
General surgeons at the University of Chicago Medicine focus on a broadrange of diseases, including various types of cancer, endocrinedisorders, esophageal diseases, bariatric surgical treatment, breastdiseases, and more. In treating this wide spectrum of diseases, oursurgeons are also trained to use minimally invasive techniques,including robotic and laparoscopic approaches, to ease the patient\'ssurgical experience. Our surgeons also work in close collaboration withexperts across the hospital to ensure each patient receives the care heor she deserves to achieve optimal outcomes.
The research endeavors by faculty and investigators in the Section ofGeneral Surgery are just as wide and varied as the diseases they treat.In addition to their numerous outcomes-based research projects, ourinvestigators are busy with complex basic science questions that willone day allow physicians to deliver better care to all patients. Thesescientific endeavors revolve around uncovering the pathophysiology ofinfections, genomics and physiology of pancreatic cancer, and much more.
Job Summary
The Advanced Practice Provider in the Section of General Surgery workscollaboratively within the multidisciplinary team for theGastrointestinal Surgical Oncology program and participates inpreoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative patient care.
Responsibilities
Provides direct patient care for adult patients with acute and/orchronic illnesses in the inpatient and outpatient setting atmultiple hospital locations, including Hyde Park and AdventHealthHinsdale.Performs procedures and first-assists in the operating room astrained and appropriately credentialed.Builds a clinical practice in conjunction with the surgeon toindependently see return and post-op patients.Actively participates in program building and improvement measures.Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifiesnormal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, andpsycho-social status.Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completesother necessary documents.Provides follow-up/post-op care in the outpatient clinic.Coordinates preoperative and postoperative planning with primarycare providers and anesthesia providers for patients traveling froma distance.Collaborates with primary care providers, specialty care providersand/or inpatient providers to provide comprehensive patient care.Performs advanced treatments and/or procedures followingverification of competency including but not limited to:administration of chemotherapy orders, paracentesis, pleural taps,tumor biopsies, and other department specific procedures.Facilitates referral of patients to department appropriatereferrals: specialty care, physical therapy, occupational therapy.May provide cross coverage for other General Surgery programs.Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account thebenefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness forthe patient, family and the organization.Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions neededto achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient\'s plan of care.Performs other related work as needed.Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from anaccredited s hool/college.
