JOB SUMMARY
The Academic Center for Exploratory Students (ACES) at the University of Connecticut is seeking applicants for the position of Academic Advisor 1. The successful candidate will work as part of a team of advisors who provide academic advising primarily for first and second year exploratory students. The population advised in ACES includes a significant number of students who are undecided about their majors, as well as students who are planning to apply to one of UConns schools or colleges. The incumbent is expected to work with a dynamic team of professional advisors and administrative staff across the University and support students in their academic and personal goals by promoting student-centered partnerships. It is also an expectation that the incumbent advances the Universitys commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of their work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage a caseload of 300-350 students, providing individual, group, and drop-in advising services.Guide, mentor, and advise students through the major selection process and help facilitate a culture of exploration across the campus community.Advise students regarding coursework and graduation requirements, policies and procedures, academic probation and dismissals, and provide guidance to students with academic difficulties.Assist in course planning, scheduling, and registration activities during both the semester and new student orientation.Serve as a resource for current and prospective students, parents, campus partners, and others regarding academic policies and programs.Develop and participate in student recruitment and retention activities including the Universitys admission process.Conduct, support, and participate in presentations, workshops, events, and outreach for students, parents, and the wider campus community.Provide instruction for First Year Experience courses, which may include specialized First Year Seminars for first year and exploratory students.Assist with specialized programs, such as The Major Experience Program.Assist colleagues in composing and maintaining the Offices websites, social media, and other communications materials.Perform other related duties and special assignments as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree in a related field and three years of position-related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support, OR advanced degree in a related field and one year of related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support.Ability and knowledge to support undergraduate students, including first-generation college students and students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team setting.Ability to build rapport with students, families, and University partners.Ability to work on occasional nights and weekends and travel occasionally for work purposes.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in higher education, counseling, or related discipline (anticipated by May 2024).Advising experience in postsecondary/higher education institution(s).Experience in the interpretation of academic policies, regulations, and procedures.Experience teaching or conducting workshops.APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a full-time, permanent position. The starting salary is $56,102.
