Academic and Admissions Advisor
Welcome to Classroom & Continuing Education Enrolled Student Services! We work to create a supportive and welcoming BYU experience for our students, as they progress in their educational goals, through the mission and aims of BYU. This position provides academic and admissions advisement to prospective and current, FlexGE, Bachelor of General Studies (BGS), Visiting Students (VS), concurrent high school, and post-baccalaureate students. You'll get to work at BYU's hidden gem, the BYU Salt Lake Center, and in the Harman Building in Provo. Enjoy a blended schedule which includes options for remote work!
What you'll do in this position:
· Provide academic advisement consistent with the standards and expectations set by national organizations and BYU advisement councils. Advise prospective students (and their family members) considering admission to FlexGE or BGS including admission criteria for domestic and international students, Honor Code expectations, and other educational opportunities more suited to the student circumstances.
· You'll get to respond to initial requests; admitting students to the program; helping them set and achieve academic goals; providing ongoing motivation, direction, and support; and helping them prepare for graduation.
· Help students determine if one of the FlexGE, BGS, Visiting Student programs is a good fit for their educational and career goals.
· Determine which students are not making satisfactory progress, how to approach them, and how to help them succeed.
· Identify options for students to satisfy degree requirements and make recommendations based on their interests, values, and abilities.
· Assist students with the graduation planning process, approve graduation plans, and career advising.
· Plan events with the FlexGE and BGS programs: new student orientation, socials, activities, etc.
· Get to be a part of the BYU advising community by attending monthly in-service and annual advising conference.
What qualifies you for this role:
Required:
· A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
· Bachelor's degree and 3 years advisement experience OR
· Advisement certification (or equivalent graduate coursework) and 0-3 years of advisement experience.
Preferred
· Master's degree.
· Able to analyze student problems and use the right advising theory and techniques to work through them.
· Extensive knowledge of BYU University Core and other graduation requirements.
· Familiarity with campus services and locations.
