Assistant Head of School
Freire Wilmington is seeking an Assistant Head of School for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. Reporting to the Head of School, the Assistant Head of School will be responsible for assisting in the day to day operations of the school, with a special emphasis on instructional leadership. At Freire, we believe that when students create, they build the future. The Assistant Head of School will work with school leadership to ensure a school environment (academic and cultural) conducive to this creative, hands-on, problem-based learning model.
Responsibilities:
Develop excellence in all instructional staff by conducting formal and informal classroom observations and coaching support.Shape and analyze data to improve school operations and student success.Design and lead professional development for teachers.Build a culture of instructional excellence and continuous improvement characterized by standards-based, problem-based instruction, collaboration, and a relentless focus on maximizing student learning and positive experience.Support teacherswith suggestions and strategies to improve curriculum, instruction, assessment, and classroom management.Create a culture where students and staff are pushed to take risks, to fail, to create, and to build.Foster a joyfulschool climate, including the thoughtful adherence to the Student Code of Conduct and resolution of student conflict.Assist with daily operations, including student arrival and dismissal, celebrating success, scheduling, attendance, facility management, cafeteria management, etc.Cultivate meaningful and beneficial family engagement.Manage state testingincluding test setup through the state, ordering materials, coordinating administration including use of accommodations during administration, and maintaining test security.
Qualifications:
Passion for and commitment to the mission and students of Freire.3-5 years of classroom instructional experience, preferably in a secondary setting. School leadership experience a plus.Belief that students should be drivers of their learning and that mistakes are a critical part of that learningTenacious, meticulous, and willingness to do whatever it takes.Always ready to lead and learn.Ability to be flexible, resilient and adapt to changing priorities.Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and rapidly-changing environment.

In 2018-19, juniors who enrolled at Freire Wilmington for at least three years were significantly more likely to score proficient on reading and math assessments compared to juniors who attended for just one or two years (47% proficient vs 20% in ELA and 22% proficient vs 12% in Math).Expanded Facilities: In winter 2023, Freire Wilmington will break ground on a new gymnasium featuring spectator seating, locker rooms, and community gathering spaces. We anticipate that this facility will open for student use by the end of the 2023-24 school year!
