Job Summary:
The UW Supervisor acts as first level management for the Underwriting division, handling both personnel tasks and issues, as well as technical UW tasks. The ideal candidate will be responsible for increasing sales by way of existing retail agent clients and securing new business accounts by providing excellent customer service, product knowledge and creative and timely problem-solving. This position will have a strong focus on the grocery/retail segment including property and general liability/XS lines of business and work comp.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following: Locate new sales opportunities by visiting existing and new customers and presenting our products and services. Maintain and increase current profitable books of business. Establish and foster client relationships and anticipate and resolve any problems that may arise. Respond expeditiously to customer needs and follow through on all aspects of requests, both written and verbal. Embrace change and participate in activities needed to support the growth of the company. Develop, analyze, select, and profitably price risks of varying complexity with an emphasis on new business production. Provide thorough and clear underwriting proposals and in a timely manner. Achieve agreed upon production and loss ratio goals within assigned book of business. Help develop UW standards, methods, and processes in accordance with best practices and industry benchmarks. Manage personnel training needs, development plans and stretch assignment for UW team. Provide basic and complex system admin for issue resolution and problem solving. Approve timecards, Paid Time Off, and other Payroll related functions as the supervisor. Maintains harmony among workers and resolves grievances. Manage the team's performance using KPI's, monthly 1:1s, task reconciliations, reports, and audit procedures. Build strong, positive agent relationships to promote profitability and growth of new business and the retention of existing business. Identify opportunities for underwriting improvement and recommend solutions. This position will require some travel to existing and new client meetings. Required Experience: 10+ years commercial underwriting experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience managing direct reports. Conflict resolution skills and thorough understanding of company policy and procedures. Large account Property/GL experience preferred. Experience in retail, grocery, supermarket insurance preferred. Experience managing direct reports. Must be deemed to effectively speak, read, write, and effectively comprehend English. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus. Must possess basic math skills. Ability to perform these basic operations using units of American money and weight measurement, and volume. Ability to calculate premiums based on exposures and rates. Ability to apply payments and/or refunds to specific invoices and item numbers. Licensing and designations preferred but not required. Reasoning ability. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to anticipate and resolve future problems before they occur. Ability to solicit assistance when necessary. Ability to problem solve beyond conventional solutions (think outside of the box). To think and always act in the best interest of the Agency, Customer, and Carrier. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands to operate computer keyboard and telephone. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee must be self-starter, highly motivated and be able to effectively work remotely Education: High School Diploma required; Bachelor degree or higher preferred; Certified UW and/or progressive training in UW/Insurance specific disciplines. Minimum 5 to 10 years CGL and Property underwriting experience, with a focus on property and grocery/retail segment is a plus. Must be able to work independently and build strong client and company relationships. Bachelor's degree is desired. Disclosure required under applicable state or municipality regulations: The expected salary range for this position is $90,000-$100,000 and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate's skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position's business line, scope and level.
