About Summer Intern - Comptroller, Financial Accounting & Reporting

  Description

  The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey offers paid internships, providing students with the opportunity to work with experienced professionals on assignments critical to building, operating, and maintaining transportation and infrastructure assets in New York and New Jersey.   The Comptroller's Department is looking for an intern to join their Financial Accounting & Reporting team!

  About the Comptroller's Department:

  As a reporting Department to the Chief Financial Officer, the Comptroller's Department is a team of dedicated professionals who ensure the accuracy of the Port Authority's finances. As part of the Comptroller's Department team, you will gain insight and experience surrounding the agency's financial structure and internal control processes as well as knowledge of the operations of our various lines of business, giving you extensive opportunities for a long-term career at the Port Authority.

  Under the Corporate Reporting section of the Department, the Financial Accounting and Reporting Division provides technical accounting expertise, financial issue resolution, and key financial information reporting; interprets and applies the accounting pronouncements issued by the Governmental Accounting and Financial Accounting Standards Boards; coordinates with agency's external independent auditors to ensure that publicly reported financial information is presented fairly and accurately and in accordance with applicable accounting standards; and prepares the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, including the Audited Financial Statements.

  Within the Financial Accounting & Reporting Division, falls the General Ledger Management/Financial Systems (GLMS) that maintains the agency's critical financial databases, ensuring their accuracy, integrity, and timeliness; provides information technology and project management leadership designed to sustain the effectiveness and usefulness of the agency's financial and reporting systems; analyzes new and evolving business processes and procedures, particularly on the planning, design, and implementation of finance related components; and develops, implements, maintains, and monitors the Comptroller's information technology infrastructure and security environment.

  Responsibilities:

  Prepare cash and insurance reconciliationReview debt transactions and schedulesReconcile balance sheet accountsUpdate of G/L accounts in SAPHelp with new GASB pronouncement research papers

  Qualifications:

  Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program through the Fall 2024 semester (August 2024 or beyond)Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, SAP, etc.Excellent written and oral communication skillsInterest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey regionInterest in public service and/or transportationWillingness to learn

  Desired

  Internship Details:

  The start date will be Thursday, May 30 with an orientation that will take place at 4 World Trade Center in Lower ManhattanThe internship will last 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 23This is a full-time internship (generally 5 days per week at 7.25 hours of work per day plus a 45-minute break)The format is expected to be hybrid, partially virtual and partially in-person at 2 Montgomery Street in Jersey City, NJThe hourly salary range is $17.20 to $28.85 (the hourly salary is determined by internship type and school year)These details are subject to change
