About Senior Laboratory Science Professional

Senior Laboratory Science Professional - 32435 University Staff

  Description

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

School of Medicine | Department of Medicine | Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care

Job Title: Senior Laboratory Science Professional

  Position: #00818555 – Requisition: #32435

  Job Summary:

The research in the Schwartz/Yang Lab focuses on understanding how a combination of genetic factors and environmental exposures contribute to an individual's disposition to develop lung disease. We conduct cutting-edge basic and translational research in pulmonary fibrosis and sarcoidosis, focusing on genetics, genomics, epigenetics, animal models, and molecular determinants of human disease. In the laboratory, we use genome editing approaches to manipulate genetic variants and expression of key genes in primary cell and animal models. Computational approaches include genetic screens for genes that interact with MUC5B, identification of biomarkers of early disease, and single cell and spatial transcriptomic technologies. Our ultimate goal is to understand the early mechanisms of lung fibrosis, develop biomarkers for early detection, and ultimately identify therapeutics for early treatment of disease.

Our pulmonary fibrosis genetics and genomics research seeks to uncover the genetic and environmental determinants of pulmonary fibrosis. Our ultimate goal is to use genetic variants, alone or in combination with gene expression fingerprints and/or peripheral blood biomarkers, to treat patients based on the genetic subtype of IPF they have, and to initiate treatment in the preclinical stages of disease rather than at a late stage when lung is scarred irreversibly, and prognosis is poor.

We are focusing on diseases with the usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) radiologic and pathologic pattern, specifically, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (CHP), and rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD). Our group identified a gain-of-function genetic variant in the airway mucin MUC5B as the key predisposition factor for development of early and established forms of IPF, CHP, and RA-ILD. We are using cutting edge technologies of spatial and single cell profiling as well as multi-omic integration methods to pursue novel biology, treatment, and biomarkers. For this work, we collect and process human blood, tissue, and other biospecimen.

This individual will be responsible for receiving and processing human biospecimens and associated data. They will also perform basic experiments such as genotyping and quantitative PCR assays. This position requires basic laboratory experience, detailed record keeping, attention to detail, and the ability to work with windows-based software and database interfaces. This individual must work well independently and as a part of the larger team.

  Key Responsibilities:

Barcoding, tracking and organization of samples and data received in the laboratory, including tasks such as uploading CT scan into our study database, tracking of biospecimens and isolated nucleic acids in freezers and LIMS.

Processing of human blood and isolation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Nucleic acid (DNA and RNA) isolation from blood and lung tissue and quality control of isolated nucleic acids.

Genotyping and RNA analysis including Taqman, RT-qPCR, targeted DNA and RNA sequencing on MiSeq.

  Work Location:

Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite and is located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. Must be willing and able to occasionally work on weekends and outside of regular business hours when required.

  Why Join Us:

About the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine

Thank you for your interest in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado! Our over 140 faculty are located across four sites: the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, National Jewish Health, Denver Health, and the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System.

We are very proud of our long and illustrious history. Many seminal discoveries in pulmonary and critical care medicine occurred here in Denver, including advances in tuberculosis, interstitial lung disease, airway disease, cancer, and critical care. Many of our former trainees have taken leadership roles in academic medicine, including Division and Department Chairs, Deans, and American Thoracic Society Presidents.

However, we do not rest on our laurels! We continue to enhance all aspects of our division and training program, and as a result, we have seen tremendous and sustained growth. The clinical practice sites have built new hospitals, and there are multiple new research buildings across the campuses. We have been fortunate to recruit tremendous new faculty members while retaining many of our former trainees.
