About the Department of Conservation and Recreation:
The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) manages one of the largest, most diverse state parks system in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, golf courses, skating rinks, and parkways.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Seasonal Architecture Assistant to aid the Department in reducing climate impacts of state park facilities. The Department is charged with reducing emissions under Executive Order 594: Decarbonizing and Minimizing Environmental Impacts of State Government. https://www.mass.gov/executive-orders/no-594-leading-by-example-decarbonizing-and-minimizing-environmental-impacts-of-state-government
The selected applicant will support a project team in the Architecture Section with design and construction of building projects, with a particular focus on renewable energy systems and will provide research on best materials and practices to meet Executive Order 594. The successful applicant will also update an asset management database with information on existing climate beneficial improvements.
Anticipated tasks and responsibilities include:
• Work with DCR Office of Cultural Resources to locate record plans and archives.
• Document cultural resource value of older structures
• Coordinate asset inventory with DCR's Asset Management Modernization Program (AMMP).
• Coordinate project location with DCR's GIS program.
• Conduct field observation trips to photograph and document existing conditions.
• Provide weekly reports on work accomplished.
• Write reports and prepare graphics to summarize findings on material selections and assigned projects.
• Provide support for financial and contractual administration including preparing invoices for approval and budget tracking.
• Other related duties, as required.
Qualifications:
• Knowledge of architectural design, planning and architectural graphic standards
• Ability to use ACAD and Excel spreadsheets.
• Familiarity with GIS
• Familiarity with energy conservation measures and decarbonization technologies such as photovoltaic systems, air source heat pumps, insulation, high performance windows, and wood pellet boilers.
• Experience in field work related to building assessment and documentation.
• Ability to prepare reports and illustrative graphics.
• Ability to work well with others, communicate regularly with supervisor and project team.
• Ability to manage project budgets and schedules.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualification:
• Undergraduate degree in architecture, planning, engineering, construction management, net zero/sustainable technologies or related field.
• Experience in creating and reviewing architectural plans and site plans.
• Project Management experience.
• Ability to self-manage and work efficiently.
• Willing ness to spend time in the field.
• Ability to coordinate with DCR's GIS and AMMP staff.
