  Job Description

  The Department of Mental Health/Metro Boston Mental Health Units (MBMHU) in the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital are seeking an experienced human services professional to serve as an Inpatient Rehabilitation Counselor. This individual will collaborate with other treatment team members to provide essential services to the inpatients on the psychiatric units. The selected candidate will be a member of the Rehabilitation Department and will work collaboratively with assigned unit multidisciplinary team to design and facilitate patient centered, trauma, diverse and inclusive rehabilitation services for adult patients living with severe and persistent mental illness. The incumbent will provide rehabilitation assessment, monitoring and evaluation of patient progress by completing documentation and goal setting with individual patients. The individual will development, implement, assess, monitor the Dual Recovery Group Treatment Program. The ideal candidate is an individual who works collaboratively in problem-resolution, is compassionate, flexible, creative, and is committed to capacity-building at both the individual and organizational levels.

  Please note: This is a full-time, 40-hour position. The hours are 8:00am - 4:30pm, Sunday through Thursday, with Friday and Saturday off.

  Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  Ensures that services are diverse, inclusive, strengths based, recovery based, focused on rehabilitation and are diverse, inclusive, and patient centered.Ensures that the patient is at the center of all care and that all interventions are developed and provided in a manner consistent with their preferences by utilizing cultural and community resources.Administers rehabilitation assessments for all new admissions and determines appropriate rehabilitation treatment plan.Evaluates each patient's needs for dual recovery rehabilitation interventions through direct observations, review of record, one-on-one interviews with patient and discussions with providers.Provides expertise and training regarding dual diagnosis and co-occurring treatment to patients living with severe and persistent mental illness.Provides specialized consultation and training for the rehabilitation team via 1) modeling of behaviors and attitudes consistent with the integrated dual disorder treatment model, 2) provision of informal and ad hoc assistance with specific patients during team meeting and treatment planning meetings, 3) provision of formal training (e.g., didactic, skill-based teaching) and psychoeducation to departmental team members and 4) teaching and modeling regarding the implementation of interventions to address substance use.Develops, implements, assesses, and monitors Dual Recovery Group Program quality improvement and assurance initiatives.Assists with all aspects of dual recovery rehabilitation including teaching, facilitation, and co-facilitation groups to assist patients with improving functional abilities, completing projects, developing independent living skills, and exploring vocational interests.Works independently to plan, organize, supervise, and review special events and activities on the psychiatric units to encourage growth and motivation for patients.Completes all documentation related to patient care and department protocol in a timely manner.Makes recommendations for rehabilitation treatment and discharge planning referrals.Develops and coordinates MBMHU at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital as a fieldwork site for Rehabilitation Counseling and/or Certified Alcohol and Drug Counseling interns; creates collaboration with academic institutions, develops orientation and training program; provides direct supervision to interns.Provides supervision to Rehab Coordinator A/B positions.

  Required Qualifications:

  Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practice of psychiatric rehabilitation, principles, and technique of counseling for psychiatric rehabilitation, the types, and symptoms of mental and/or emotional disorders.Knowledge of methods and techniques of psychiatric rehabilitation, motivational and reinforcement techniques, the factors, trends, and problems in providing rehabilitation services to clients.Knowledge of methods of general reporting writing, to be open to change (positive or negative) and to considerable variety in the workplace.Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations, to establish rapport with diverse people, to be sensitive to others' needs and feelings, and be understanding and helpful on the job.Capacity to interact with people who are under physical or emotional stress, to maintain composure and appropriate behavior even in very difficult situations.Ability to gather information by examining records documents and to prepare general reports, to handle complaints, arbitrates disputes, resolve grievances, or otherwise negotiate with other and to evaluate the likely success of an idea in relation to the demands of the situation.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  Experience working with patients living with severe and persistent mental illness and substance use disorders.Experience working in an inpatient environment and/or hospital setting.Knowledge of the principles and practices of rehabilitation counseling, dual diagnosis, and co-occurring treatment.Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide rehabilitation services that are diverse and inclusive to the patient population.Ability to employ strategies to engage dual recovery patients in earlier stages of change readiness and utilize

  motivational interviewing techniques in working with those who may be contemplating change.Knowledge to incorporate the practices and philosophies of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral for Treatment (SBIRT), Stages of Change, Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), Seeking Safety, Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM) and Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA) into treatment planning and the selection of interventions based on each patient's assessed readiness and expressed interest in order to support readiness, relapse prevention.

  Hospital Mission:

  At the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, we take pride in helping people recover from illnesses and conditions that are often underserved or difficult to manage in other health care settings. The DMH units within the Hospital provide inpatient psychiatric services to adults with serious mental illness with the goal of enhancing autonomy, safety and return to the community. Patients are treated by a multidisciplinary team, led by attending psychiatrists which also includes psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, mental health workers, peer specialists, occupational therapists and rehabilitative staff specializing in vocational, recreational and expressive therapies. A variety of treatment modalities are used, including psychopharmacologic, psychotherapeutic (individual, group and family), psycho-educational, behavioral, cognitive and milieu therapies.

  MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE: At least four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in social work, social casework, vocational counseling, employment counseling, rehabilitation counseling, or educational counseling.

  SUBSTITUTIONS:

  - A Bachelor's or higher degree in rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, education of the physically or emotionally handicapped, education of the multiple handicapped, education of the learning disabled, social work, psychology, human services, or counseling may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.

  - A Bachelor's or higher degree in a major other than rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, education of the physically or emotionally handicapped, education of the multiple handicapped, education of the learning disabled, social work, psychology, human services, or counseling may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience on the basis of four years of education for one year of experience.

  A Master's or higher degree in social work, psychology, human services, rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, or counseling may be substituted for an additional year of the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.

  Licensure as a Licensed Rehabilitation Counselor by the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health Professionals or Certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification may be substituted for the required experience.

  - One year of education equals 30 semester hours. Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
