ABOUT THIS POSITION
The Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth is seeking candidates for the position of Processing Archivist at the Massachusetts Archives in Boston, Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Archives is responsible for securing, preserving, and managing the state's permanent public records, and for making those historical records accessible. The Archives' collections, consisting of approximately 30,000 cubic feet of records, date from the colonial period to the present. These records of Massachusetts' state government include those from the legislative, executive and judicial branches, the military, and from state agencies and institutions.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Processing Archivist will perform all aspects of accessioning, processing, and descriptive work on a variety of archival collections, dating from the late 18th to the late 20th century. They will work independently, as well as collaboratively with the Archives processing staff and other staff and interns.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Process (including arranging and rehousing) archival collections with wide variations in physical extent, formats, time periods and complexity, including those requiring continuous ongoing additions Conduct historical research and write descriptions of archival collections necessary for producing cataloging records and finding aidsCompile information necessary for creating records in the MARC format and, as needed, enter information into a commercial archival collection management systemAssume responsibility for specific content areas, and help identify and prioritize related collections for processingAssist as needed with acquisition and analysis of new accessions, surveying, and planning for processing and shelving Identify sensitive materials that may require redaction
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Ability to work well independently, and as a team memberGood time management, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneouslyExcellent organizational, observational and analytic skills, strong attention to detail, and a sense of curiosityStrong historical research skills and excellent writing abilities, including aptitude for both concise and descriptive writingDemonstrated knowledge of archives practice, and familiarity with accepted conservation and preservation methods. Ability to work carefully with both fragile and heavy materials, including 40 lb. boxes.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program One to two years' experience as a processing archivist
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Familiarity with the MARC format and archival collection management systems such as Re:Discovery Proficio Basic knowledge of Massachusetts history Experience with government and legal records, and with the processing of large collections
