The City of Lenexa Community Development Department's Planning Division is seeking applicants for a paid internship opportunity as a Planning Intern. Acquire real-world experience with city planners and the development community within an exceptional municipality to increase your knowledge of how a city functions, develops, and plans for the future!
Internship Information:
This opportunity is available during the summer of 2024. The dates are flexible, but the anticipated internship duration is June through August.
The Planning Division operates within Lenexa City Hall between the hours of 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday through Friday.
Expect to work a consistent on-site schedule of 24 to 40 hours per week as mutually agreed upon between the candidate and Planning Manager.
Rate of pay is $15.00 per hour.
The ideal candidate will be:
A college student in an undergraduate or graduate level urban planning program or closely related program with an interest in local government, city planning, and development.
Able to attend evening meetings once to twice per month (Planning Commission and some City Council meetings; typically during the hours of 6:45pm - 8:45pm).
Enthusiastic about learning.
Eager to provide quality customer service.
Collaborative.
Self-motivated.
Detail-oriented.
Position Summary
This position works under the general supervision of the Planning Manager. Responsible for performing a wide variety of tasks related primarily to community development projects for the City of Lenexa. Work assignments include, but are not limited to, plan review, research, field inspections, code analysis, report writing, and presenting information. The Planning Intern will have opportunities to utilize permitting software, Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, and Adobe Illustrator.
To gain a thorough understanding of city planning, time will be spent with various City departments, which may include the different divisions of the Community Development Department, the Fire Department, the Municipal Services Department, the Parks and Recreation Department, and the City Manager-s Office.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities (Under General Supervision)
Acts as the Planner of the Day on a rotating basis. The Planner of the Day is responsible for answering general inquiries about zoning-related codes and processes through email, phone, or in-person interaction.
Researches information related to City codes.
Reviews development projects, writes reports, and presents information with opportunities to present to the Planning Commission and/or Board of Zoning Appeals.
Assists the Planning Division with various special projects and daily tasks.
Performs field inspections for permit review and development research.
Shadows various City employees to learn about different roles and functions.
Adheres to all safety rules, practices, and policies.
Performs other related work as required.
Qualifications
Minimum: Enrolled in an urban planning program or closely related program with experience or classwork in city planning, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, and/or cartography. Must possess a valid driver-s license.
Desired: Enrolled in a master's program for an urban planning-related degree.
Successful candidates must pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check.
