Job Description
Under direction and supervision of Registered Nurse, assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care, and performs a variety of procedures, exams and tests. Assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment, and promotes improved customer relations.
Job Responsibility
1.Receives work assignments and verbal reports from professional staff during work shift, and communicates patient information to the Registered Nurse. Uses two patient identifiers for all care and procedures. Documents observations, vital signs, height, weight, and care in medical record. Observes and reports any change in condition or mental status to nurse. Reports any signs of patient abuse to nurse or nurse manager. Sensitive and supportive toward patient, family, and significant others.
2.Assists professional staff with examinations, procedures, and treatments including reinforcement of instructions and guidance. Administers therapy, including enemas, sitz baths, warm soaks, cold packs, ace bandages and antiembolic stockings. Applies and removes continuous passive motion (CPM) device and sequential compression device (SCD. Performs postmortem care. May transport/accompany patients as needed to various departments, as directed; performs post-mortem care and transports body to morgue.
3.Performs and assists patients with activities of daily living (ADL's): bathing, grooming, shaving, oral hygiene, with special attention to skin care, perineal care, foot and heel care, turning and positioning, passive and active range of motion exercises, progressive ambulation with or without use of assistive devices, and changing bed linens. Lifts patients and exercises care in moving patients, so as not to aggravate injury or disease. Participates in fall prevention rounds including documentation as required.
4.Performs EKGs, blood glucose testing, and takes and records blood pressures. Performs visual acuities on request. Takes and records temperatures, pulses, respiration, heights, weights and abdominal girths and reports any deviations from normal to nurse. Performs all non routine phlebotomy testing. Collects and labels specimens to prepare for the laboratory. Reports to nurse the ability or inability to obtain specimens. Tests specimens with diagnostics
5.Ensures patient comfort and safety: Promptly responds to call lights. conducts frequent patient rounds for observation. Ensures beds are in appropriate position with wheels locked and that side rails remain in 'up' position as indicated. Ensures patient call bells and bedside articles are within patient reach. Reports findings to professional staff. provides observation on a one-on-one basis when required. Reports patients pain scale level to nurse.
6.Adheres to infection control protocols including handwashing, maintaining a safe, clean patient environment and undertaking standard precautions and isolation precautions.
7.Assists in achieving nutritional needs: Distributes water pitchers, prepares patients for meals and nourishment, assists with menu selection, feeds patients or assists as needed, encourages or restricts fluids, records and totals intake.
8.Assists with elimination needs: Gives and removes bedpans and urinals. assists patients to commode or bathroom. routinely checks patients for incontinence. applies incontinence devices as instructed. records and totals outputs (urine, stool, and drainage).
9.Assists with admissions. completes clothing lists and checks property as required. Orients patients to unit environment and escorts or transports patients as required.
10.Maintains patient care units in a neat and orderly condition; strips patient units upon discharge and prepares rooms for new admissions; maintains necessary stock on all procedure and supply carts; and ensures that all equipment is clean and in its appropriate place.
11.Performs related duties, as required.

Job Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
*Minimum one (1) year of direct patient care experience in an acute care facility including, but not limited to, EKG machine, blood pressure machine. Electronic thermometers, bed scale, bed lift, hypothermia machine, specialized beds, telephone, pulse oximeters, blood glucose monitoring.
*Patient Care Technician Certification required.
*Heart Saver Certification, preferred.

The salary range for this position is $24.62-$27.04/hour
