About Outdoor Education Specialist

  Job Description

  The Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution. To carry out this mission, the Department exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife species, plants, and natural communities, as well as the habitats that support them.

  The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (DFW) is responsible for the conservation - including restoration, protection and management - of fish and wildlife resources for the benefit and enjoyment of the public.

  The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Fisheries and Wildlife is accepting resumes and applications for the position of Outdoor Education Specialist (Game Biologist I). This position is assigned to the Field Headquarters in Westborough, MA.

  A cover letter and resume must be submitted as part of the application process and attached "as relevant" to the requisition.

  The Outdoor Education Specialist assists the Outreach and Education staff in implementing and conducting hunting, fishing, and shooting sports education programs. They also assist in other agency education, communication, and outreach efforts. The Outdoor Education Specialist is responsible for a wide range of education and outreach activities related to MassWildlife's Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation (R3) efforts to increase participation in hunting, fishing, and the shooting sports. This includes assisting with implementing R3 programs for new hunters and anglers, working with partners on statewide R3 efforts, and developing how-to instructional resources for new hunters and anglers.

  SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE:

  1. Supports the R3 Coordinator in conducting Archery in the Schools Program, Learn to Hunt Program, Becoming an Outdoorswoman Program, Explore Bowhunting, Mentored Youth Hunting Programs, and other related agency recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) programs.

  2. Works with the Angler Education Coordinator to plan and conduct fishing programs.

  3. Coordinates and works with volunteer instructors for in-person outdoor skills programs.

  4. Assists Wildlife Education Coordinator with aspects of agency conservation education programs, such as Project WILD, Junior Duck Stamp, and Envirothon.

  5. Assists the Hunter Education Program Administrator in teaching Basic Hunter Education courses, as needed.

  6. Develops written content and course materials to support MassWildlife's education programs. Assists with the development of instructional videos and digital content to teach outdoor skills, including hunting and fishing.

  7. Represents MassWildlife at events, including virtual or in-person programs, seminars, webinars, and meetings, as needed.

  8. Develops and grows relationships with external partners in a diversity of communities across the Commonwealth. Collaborates with partners on R3 initiatives.

  9. Assists with event management by registering students for courses, evaluating course data, and collecting and inputting student feedback forms.

  10. Assists with marketing and promotion of MassWildlife programs, services, products, and events that engage new and existing audiences and promote hunting, fishing, and shooting sports.

  11. Delivers exceptional customer service in-person and when answering public inquiries received through email, social media, or phone calls. Assists at Field Headquarters front desk reception, as assigned.

  12. Other duties as assigned.

  QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE

  1. Ability to work many nights and weekends.

  2. Knowledge and experience with outdoor skills such as hunting, fishing and trapping preferred.

  3. Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, for hunting and fishing.

  4. Demonstrated education experience with both adults and children.

  5. Demonstrate strong creative, strategic, analytical and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at a time. Strong interpersonal skills and flexibility.

  6. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written expression.

  7. Ability to exercise sound judgment and deal tactfully with others.

  8. Ability to work independently.

  9. Knowledge of the principles and practices of wildlife biology.

  10. Knowledge of the types and characteristics of wildlife habitats.

  11. Knowledge of the types, characteristics and habits of birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.

  12. Demonstrated skills with various computer programs for data entry/analysis.

  13. Ability to gather information by examining records and documents.

  14. Ability to operate a motor vehicle, and drive larger vehicles like pickups and vans, as well as trailering occasionally.

  PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  A Bachelor's degree in conservation education, wildlife/fisheries biology, ecology, natural resources, or related field and one year experience in conservation education or related education experience.

  LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License or equivalent license from the state in which you reside and an acceptable driving record.

  Qualifications

   First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

  Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, paraprofessional or technical experience in wildlife biology, wildlife management work or forestry or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

  I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in wildlife management, wildlife biology or forestry may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.

  Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
