  Position Details

  POSITION SUMMARY:

  Position summary: Serves as a teacher, assigned to the School Media Center and is responsible for providing instruction, in the languages of instruction at the school, in the use of the Media Center and related research activities. This includes helping students choose from the media center's collection of print, audiovisual, and digital resources which are related to their interests and to the subjects which they study in the classroom. As part of a teaching assignment, the Media Center Specialist facilitates and coordinates all aspects of the Media Center Program and works with the staff in support of the school curriculum. (These responsibilities will vary according to size of the school, its physical plant and its program organization).

  DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  Assumes responsibility for providing culturally and linguistically relevant and responsive instruction in cooperation with teachers in the use of the library media center and its resources, including technology devices used for digital learning and research, with individual students and groups.Develops a climate that encourages students and staff to take full advantage of the media center and its resources.Helps students to develop study habits, acquire independence in learning and to gain skills in the techniques of inquiry and critical evaluation.Assists students in developing competencies in listening, viewing, speaking and reading in the languages of instruction of the school.Works cooperatively with the administration, faculty and students in reviewing, selecting, ordering and maintaining a variety of culturally and linguistically appropriate instructional materials and equipment, including the management of digital devices.Works with teachers in planning and implementing the district curriculum in the languages of instruction of the school.Serves on teaching teams as a media resource consultant.Shares appropriate information with staff concerning student progress, problems and achievements as observed in the media center.Provides staff in-service training necessary for effective use of media and digital resources, technology equipment and the Media Center.Consults with teachers, students and technicians in the organization and production of supplementary learning materials, including digital resources.Prepares bibliographies as requested to supplement special courses of study, to stimulate public interest and to acquaint the staff with new acquisitions.Provides professional leadership in the establishment and conduct of the media center program in the school.Employs an equity lens when maintaining, allocating and expanding all funds assigned and/or available to the media center for the purchase of print, audiovisual and computer materials, equipment and supplies.Develops, implements and supervises technical processes for the acquisition, organization, maintenance, retrieval and inventory of media center materials, digital resources and equipment.Maintains appropriate records and supervises the preparation of operational reports as required by the District.Provides instruction for all paid and volunteer media center personnel as needed.Facilitate the use of technology to support students and staff as consumers, producers, and presenters of information and ideas.Educate students and school staff to be safe, ethical, and responsible citizens in a virtual environment.Design and facilitate meaningful virtual experiences to promote a love of reading and lifelong learning.Utilize emerging technology equipment, software and tools to streamline program administration processes.Be informed about emerging research and trends relating to education and technology.Develop, maintain, and provide equitable access to a collection of diverse informational and recreational resources in multiple formats.

  EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  Incumbents must be properly licensed by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission for assignment as a Professional Educator - Teacher. For positions identified within core academic areas, incumbents must be designated as highly qualified by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) to teach the designated core subjects. Core academic areas include Language Arts (English), Reading, Mathematics, Sciences, Foreign Language (except Chinese-Mandarin), Social Studies and Art.

  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  Must hold a TSPC license with a Media Specialist/Educational Media Endorsement/Library endorsement.

  PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  Multilingual abilities - Bilingual/Bi-Cultural Chinese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese applicants are highly desirable.

  EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

  Academic achievement standards that aligns to district goals and create a comprehensive, rigorous and coherent curricular program.Research-based instructional strategies and models for improving instructional practices.Existing and emerging education and instructional technologies and software.

  Ability to:

  Advocate, model and implement Portland Public School's Educational Racial Equity policy.Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse backgrounds.Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.Manage student behavior and maintain discipline in accordance with school, district and state policies, procedures and laws.Assign and grade class work, homework, projects, tests and assignments.Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.Prepare classroom for class activities.Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies.Provide appropriate feedback on work.Encourage parent and community involvement.Provide student information to authorized individuals in a timely manner.Participate in appropriate professional growth and extracurricular activities.Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.Utilize relevant technologies to support and differentiate instruction.Welcome and empower students and families, including underrepresented families of color and those whose first language may not be English, as essential partners in student education.Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.Update records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations.Prepare required reports on students and activities.Participate in department, school, district and parent meetings.Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and caregivers regarding student progress and student needs.Observe and evaluate student's performance and development.

  ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENT: Library Media

  COMPENSATION: $52,624 TO $102,402 (Annual salary based on 1.0 FTE)

  WORK YEAR: 202 days

  FTE: 0.5

  Portland Public Schools is a public employer and participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP). Eligible employees are required by statute to contribute 6% of salary on a pre-tax basis to OPSRP/IAP, after serving six months under a PERS employer.
