Managing Director, Wholesale Excess Casualty

Reporting to the Head of Wholesale Excess Casualty for the East, the Managing Director's primary focus is on growing and sustaining a profitable book of new and renewal excess casualty business in the Southeast Region. The Managing Director will take an active role in strategic planning to develop and implement an underwriting strategy that identifies profitable market opportunities and new product development. He/she will be responsible for managing a team of 5 underwriters.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for the performance of a regional book of wholesale excess casualty business including leading and developing a team of underwriters. Takes an active role in building on existing broker relationships to increase production sources and identify profitable market opportunities. Recommends objectives and plans to achieve growth and financial profitability for segment products. Ensures all compliance requirements are met.Also responsible for directly managing a book of wholesale excess casualty business. Analyzes submissions to make decisions based on individual risk characteristics, exposure analysis, hazard recognition and controls. Within delegated authority levels accepts, rejects or modifies new and/or renewal business to ensure a profitable book of business. Prices business according to company underwriting and pricing guidelines.Ensures that underwriting strategies supporting profitable growth (execution on underwriting, risk selection, compliance, etc.) are consistently followed throughout the assigned underwriting team including passing underwriting audits.Maintains and develops new relationships with brokers and reinsurers. Communicates effectively and persuasively with agents/brokers on underwriting issues including, but not limited to, decisions on cancellations, declinations, exposure concerns, coverage approaches.Interfaces effectively with other business units within the company, including operations and actuarial, to improve overall results and profitability.Ensures the use of best practices and compliance with all company practices and policies.Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
10+ years of experience in underwriting, marketing, and management of underwriting with an emphasis in wholesale excess casualtyExtensive relationships with wholesale brokersEntrepreneurial; ability to work in a fast pace environmentPrior experience managing a teamExcellent written and verbal communication skillsHigh energy and positive demeanorBS/BA degree required; Master's degree and/or insurance designation a plus.Ability to travel as needed.

This position is based in Alpharetta, GA.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$165,280-$247,920
