In the 1960's, it was acquired by Murco and in 1998 by Packerland. In 2000, Packerland was acquired by Smithfield. In 2010, the facility joined the JBS USA family.
Plainwell is the only JBS plant with Modified Atmospheric Packaging (MAP), a packaging process that changes oxygen levels to extend shelf-life. The MAP process is a part of the Plainwell ground beef operation. Plainwell is also one of the few plants that produces ground beef patties. Over one million lbs (450,000 kg) of beef are produced each day. The Plainwell facility produces biogas in an anaerobic lagoon and uses it in place of natural gas to heat a portion of the water used in the plant. The facility was recognized by the American Meat Institute as a Tier 3 facility for its accomplishments with ISO 14001. Plainwell recently built a $31 million distribution center (85,000 ft²) with a 55,000 box capacity.

Ground Beef Maintenance Superintendent
Job description:
This position is to lead the plant’s Ground Beef operations maintenance electronics department. The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following
Oversee overall safety for self and subordinates
Create a food safe mentality for team and others
Oversee maintenance support for daily operations
Oversee failure maintenance break downs and help create root cause prevention plans
Support the general processes and policies laid down by the maintenance department as well as the company policies.
Ensure planned preventative work orders are carried out in a timely fashion
Provide coaching and development for subordinates to ensure a good succession plans and over all team strength
Identify opportunities with in processes and be able to come up with adequate solutions
Ensure daily consolidation of shifts events are passed down to followings shifts
Create and audit procedures for preventative maintenance work orders
Requirements:
5-7 years of food industry maintenance experience or equivalent
A bachelors or associates in electronics/electrical or engineering is preferred
Must have good communication skills
Above average computer skills
PLC trouble shooting, editing and programming experience
