About Director, Science Partnerships & Impact, People eXperience and Technology Central Science

  Description

  PXT Central Science provides scientific leadership and support for Amazon PXT, partnering on hundreds of projects per year with businesses across Amazon improving all aspects of work, benefits, and career development. In this role you will work with science teams and business leaders to develop, align, and drive to completion high-impact science projects and products. You will play the critical role of translating between science and business needs to strategically shape successful science-driven projects and products. You will use your understanding of business’s priorities and needs, familiarity with scientific methods and econometrics, and strong technical written and verbal communication skills to lead and facilitate partnerships between business teams and scientists to help achieve aligned goals. You will manage multiple stakeholders, and look for ways to scale learnings from one partnership to positively impact Amazonians across business lines. You play a critical role in crafting and coordinating the organization’s goals through working-backwards documents and communication at the senior-most levels of Amazon. Your leadership will help business partners utilize best scientific methods and science-driven tools to make their organizations more efficient and effective in a changing market. Finally, this role will drive completion of goal projects, bringing real science to each business partner’s people initiatives.

  The ideal candidate will have a track record of:

  • Developing, driving alignment around, and executing high-impact, multi-stakeholder projects

  • Building coalitions and alignment among senior business leaders

  • Influencing at the most senior leadership levels (e.g., Board of Directors; CEO and top team)

  • Building partnerships through excellent written, oral communication and influence

  • Leading with scientists to produce business results by aligning science support to business needs, business leaders to science requirements, so that we reliably identify what works and scale it

  • Translating between technical documents and findings and business strategy documents and decisions

  • Explaining statistics/econometric and research concepts to general business audiences

  • Delivering results in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment that requires strong scientific analysis, business judgement, and exceptional communication and project management skills

  Key job responsibilities

  • Develop a deep understanding of business teams’ core people challenges, needs, and priorities; be able to look around corners to see business needs; successfully translate between business needs and technical teams’ requirements

  • Leverage analytical and research understanding to help science and business teams drive science-driven products and partnerships to impact

  • Drive the development of organizational goals from program vision to implementation, providing partnership, expertise, and thought leadership at the executive level, and influencing colleagues and stakeholders

  • Drive effective teamwork, communication, collaboration, and commitment across multiple disparate groups with competing priorities

  • Effectively lead broad programs, dependencies and bottlenecks, manage stakeholders, anticipate and make trade-offs, and balance the business needs versus technical/scientific constraints

  About the team

  The Central Science team within Amazon’s People eXperience and Technology org (PXTCS) uses economics, behavioral science, statistics, and machine learning to identify mechanisms and process improvements that simultaneously improve Amazon, the lives, well-being of and value of work to Amazonians. PXTCS is an interdisciplinary team that invests in innovation and rapid prototyping of scientific models and software to develop and deliver solutions that measurably contribute to achieving these goals. We provide science leadership and support throughout Amazon PXT, covering all aspects of people support including benefits, how we work, skills and career development for corporate and operations employees. Our interdisciplinary team economic modeling, statistical analysis, survey science, ML/AI, generative AI research design and implementation to help leaders make great decisions and hep PXT make delightful tools that help Amazonians delight our customers. Our work has a significant positive impact on 1.5 million Amazonians and the communities Amazon serves.

  Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science or related field

  • 10+ years of experience in business-facing roles, leading high-impact projects and initiatives in a corporate environment

  • 5+ years of experience leading teams

  • A passion for working backwards from customer problems to develop solutions using the right statistical, econometric, data science, and machine learning approaches

  Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, or related field

  • Experience leading projects related to people / talent / HR strategy, organizational design and development, employee engagement, or related project initiatives

  • Experience identifying, testing, and scaling products

  Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $237,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $350,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
