Job Summary
Battelle is seeking an experienced Director of Facility and Support Operations who will lead a 10-year renovation plan of our facilities. This leader directs a large group comprised of the following teams: Facilities Design, Engineering, Construction, Operations and Maintenance, Facilities Services, Real Estate Planning and Administration (including Regional Facilities Operations), Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H), Emergency Management, and Physical Security.
The Director manages the operations of the departments including planning, staffing, and budget management, and facilitates a strategic plan for each department that is consistent with Battelle's vision, goals, objectives, and priorities. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated capability to manage complex facility and support operations of similar size and scope.
Responsibilities
Leads the formation of a strategic facility operations plan for Battelle’s campus of the future while maintaining continuity of current operations.
Reviews and recommends facility construction and renovation priorities to maintain state-of-the-art capabilities and increase Battelle's capability for providing desired business/research atmosphere for current and future needs.
Oversees new facilities planning, construction, and maintenance and repair for existing facilities in Columbus and West Jefferson, as well as at regional locations.
Directs facility leasing, both on- and off-site, and farmland use management as well as real estate purchase and sale activities. Provides project management and construction management for tenant-related improvements at leased locations.
Directs cost-effective utility utilization programs.
Supervises Facilities Services management which includes Food Services, Conference Room Coordination, Janitorial, Shipping and Receiving, and Postal operations for the King Avenue, West Jefferson, and regional locations.
Manages Facilities and Support Operations including allocating available resources, staffing levels and career development and leadership plans for continued long-term support and growth of Battelle.
Directs Emergency Management of Columbus, West Jefferson, and regional Operations. Serves as Crisis Manager for BCO Emergency Operations. With support from the Emergency Operations Committee, makes decisions regarding emergency response to protect health and safety of Battelle staff and protection of Battelle property.
Establishes expectations for the management of the ES&H programs. With ES&H management, works to ensure safety and health for all occupants and visitors to facilities.
Establishes expectations for the management of the Physical Security programs (global security operations center, uniformed security forces, visitor registration, and access control, intrusion, and video surveillance security systems). With Physical Security management, works to ensure a safe and secure operational envelope for all occupants, staff, contractors, and visitors. Provides due diligence and transition expertise for potential Battelle acquisitions and other corporate transactions involving facilities.
Participates with Senior Leadership on negotiations with local governments as it pertains to facility-related approvals and economic development incentives, relocation or closing of public streets for expansion of facilities, and interactions with local residential commissions on facilities-related items, zoning matters, etc.
Key Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering or business; 15 years of experience in Facilities Engineering, Facilities Business Administration or Facilities Management; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field.
Demonstrated excellence in building and supporting a team. Proven ability to lead others in the achievement of goals and create teams driven by initiative, innovation, and wisdom.
Must be organized and detail oriented. Must be capable of ensuring that a wide range of different activities (technical, business development, and administrative) are performed on time and at a high quality.
A customer service focus and history of successful customer interactions.
Demonstrated ability to communicate with executive level management, teaming partners, and customers.
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with large capital-intensive operations, similar to that of a university campus or large hospital system.
Executive level corporate training or from an accredited school of management is desired.
