The Position
The New York Public Library (NYPL) seeks a leader for a pioneering opportunity to lead the ongoing digital transformation of NYPL. The ideal candidate will be a visionary digital leader and a proven operating manager who can identify and work with internal and external resources to execute an aggressive digital expansion plan. This role encompasses a unique opportunity to continue to reshape a highly regarded, world-renowned institution as it continues to fulfill its mission in a digital age. Reporting to the President and serving as a member of his executive leadership team, the Chief Digital Officer is responsible for a staff of over 60 professionals, a total operating budget of $21 million, and significant grant opportunities.

Ensuring research patrons anywhere can access any research book digitally through the Library
Unifying search and discovery across the Library's and our peers’ vast research collections
Enhancing the ebook borrowing experience for patrons of the circulating collections
Improving the patron experience for basic library interactions, including finding programs and events
Strengthening the Library’s data infrastructure and capabilities
Understanding applications of AI for internal and patron-facing products and services
Strengthening the Library’s equity mission by improving access and support for underserved communities
Working with Communications & Marketing, leverage digital tools to strengthen NYPL’s brand and expand the Library's footprint, audiences, and membership.
Responsibilities
As a transformative leader, the Chief Digital Officer will:
Drive the development, communication, and execution of a world-class digital strategy for NYPL.
Provide a consistent approach for evaluating and integrating new digital initiatives, technologies, and products that are consistent with NYPL’s mission, target audiences, and service priorities.
Champion a customer-centric organizational culture that prioritizes outcomes and service delivery improvements that patrons can see and feel. Identify, adapt, and communicate best practices from the public and private sectors.
Create a digital team and culture that can quickly identify, test and implement new digital opportunities to further build NYPL’s user base and impact.
Develop and lead a digital product “roadmap” for the organization based on a deep understanding of NYPL’s assets, mission, user needs and expectations.
Lead and manage NYPL’s digital product development process, from idea to launch, ensuring timely delivery of secure, high-quality products that meet the needs of NYPL and its constituents.
Build and manage relationships with stakeholders, including peers, trustees, and community partners, to build a product roadmap that meets user needs and strengthens program delivery.
Identify, evaluate, and build strategic partnerships to deliver on NYPL’s digital agenda and to expand NYPL’s digital capabilities.
Set a cadence of urgency and excellence by quickly shipping products, completing initiatives, and starting and finishing large-scale projects.
Provide clear management direction through collaborative leadership; foster open communication and break down “silos” between functional teams. Promote a collegial environment that encourages teamwork.
Recruit, develop, and retain top-caliber and diverse team members, and continually evolve the organizational structure and needs as NYPL and the technology landscape continue to advance.
Prepare and manage the digital team budget; successfully run the department within the established budget approved by the President.
Partner with the Information Technology team on cybersecurity initiatives and threat responses
Communicate results, challenges, and opportunities to key organization “stakeholders,” including regular updates for the NYPL leadership team.
Serve as the staff lead to the Digital Library Committee of the Board of Trustees.
Decision-Making Responsibilities
Designs and oversees digital strategy for the Library, including representing it with the Board of Trustees, key internal and external audiences
Ensures that the Library’s digital experience is relevant to patrons and meets organizational objectives. Decides on the best delivery of objectives as defined by the President and his direct reports.
Decides on major digital changes such as new digital platforms, new skills, new standards, and digital policies such as privacy that need to be addressed.
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
Bachelor’s degree and 10+ years’ experience as a digital leader or product management leader with media, educational institution, non-profit, consumer technology, or Internet company experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must include extensive experience building, testing, and launching innovative products and services that expand user base and engagement.
Requires:
Demonstrated experience leading the delivery of customer-facing technology at scale.
Deep understanding of modern technology and product delivery principles and practices, including software development and security.
Ability to communicate/translate technical concepts to a broad range of internal and external constituents.
Ability to develop and manage high-performing teams and demonstrated skill in leveraging organization structure and allocating resources efficiently to achieve results; and
Excellent communication and presentation skills, and demonstrated skill interacting with large and small groups, with the ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and at all levels of the organization.
Preferred qualification: Master’s degree and digital leader experience.

Compensation and Benefits Package
The starting salary range for this position is $400,000 to $450,000.
