  Job Description

  Under general supervision, and according to established policies and procedures, performs and assists in noninvasive and invasive cardiac procedures. Procedures include routine diagnostic cardiac catheterization, interventional procedures (balloon dilations, stent placements, coil embolization, etc.), electrophysiology procedures, tilt table studies, myocardial biopsies, and more. Responsible for monitoring, recording, generating reports on patients' vitals and hemodynamic data during procedures. Performs clinical testing on blood gases, oxygen saturations, and activated clotting times according to jointly established policies and procedures, set forth by the hospital's clinical laboratory and pediatric cardiology.

  PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  Monitors EKG and pressure wave forms throughout cardiac catheterization procedures. Analyzes changes in: a) EKG conduction and rate b) intracardiac pressures and keeps physician informed during a procedure.

  Maintains a complete record of all events occurring during a catheterization laboratory procedure through the use of an on-line computer log (i.e. medications given, fluid given and their effect, pressures measured, blood oxygen saturations and gases measured, activated clotting time values, catheter sites, type, and amount of contrast injected, angles/radiographic parameters required of all angiograms, running commentary on patient's condition, etc.)

  Performs clinical testing for blood gas analysis, oxygen saturation, and activated clotting time during catheterization procedures.

  Operates during cath procedures - contrast power injector, checks and sets x-ray factors as ordered by physician, hemodynamic and electrophysiology recorder, video/digital recorders during/post angiograms, O2 consumption line, thermodilution machine, bloom stimulator, etc.

  As scheduled and/or necessary, calibrates and performs quality control of the blood gas/co-oximeter analyzer, activated clotting time machine, O2 consumption machine, etc. Maintains accurate logs for designated machines. Adheres to established policies/procedures re: maintenance, clinical testing, quality control, proficiency testing, and reporting of results

  Assists in cardiac catheterization procedures by setting up patient on exam table with appropriate vital sign monitoring equipment. Sets up sterile procedure table and sterile fields as needed. Preps and drapes patients utilizing sterile technique. As requested, assist physicians with passing wires, catheters, and with other procedures (i.e. erythropoiesis, pericardiocentesis, EP studies, etc.).

  Orients patients to the lab and applicable equipment. Explains events and anticipated sensations throughout procedure, answers questions and provides reassurance.

  Assists in performing CPR, operating defibrillator, suctioning patient, forming artificial respiration, etc.

  As required, assists procedure physician with applying pressure to vessel access sites after catheterization procedures; observing patient for bleeding or hematoma and general patient stability. Facilitates set-up of arterial/venous line placements, when needed during/post procedure.

  Cleans and prepares instruments/equipment for sterilization Holter and event monitoring & electrocardiography, replenishes supplies as necessary and performs minor checks and repairs on equipment as needed; notifying supervisor of serious malfunctions.

  Ensures that digital images are copied on the master tape and that a digital view tape is created for each patient's angiographic study. Sees to that the master, view, and time code numbers are recorded in their log.

  Measures all pressure wave forms, enters data into computer, flags certain values (of pressure and/or saturation) for calculation purposes, indicates pull-back gradients, and reviews all entered data for errors in order to generate catheterization or procedural report.

  Performs related non-invasive procedures as requested and/or scheduled EKGs, Holter placements, Event monitor registration and teaching, stress-tests, etc.) on in-house, ambulatory, and satellite clinic patients.

  Responsible for recording billing information related to all catheterization and non-invasive procedures that the technician is involved with.

  Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area.

  Job Description

  Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.

  2. Completion of EKG course and EKG Certificate.

  3. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

  4. Two (2) years of experience in healthcare.

  JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  Ability to read, write, perform arithmetic, calculations, have basic cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and physical sciences at a level generally acquired through at least two years of college or two years of specialized training beyond high school. At least one year in a pediatric lab.

  Two years of related experience is typically required for a person to acquire the knowledge and manual skills necessary to perform the job at its highest standard.

  Must have interpersonal skills necessary to allay apprehension and explain procedures to parents and patients in general as well as those with mental and physical handicaps.

  Ability to learn and effectively utilize skills & knowledge of a wide variety of cardiac procedures and equipment.

  Must have sound knowledge of medical equipment used routinely in emergency situations; hemodynamic monitor, EKG monitor, suction equipment, transcutaneous O2 saturation monitor, BP machine, O2 equipment, temporary pacing equipment, code 99 equipment, etc.

  Ability to work well under stressful and high-pressure situations. Some of our patient population is a high risk and/or are emergency patients.

  It is strongly recommended that technicians have certification at the level of "advanced pediatric cardiopulmonary life support".

  WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  The hazards of radiation exposure, on going and cumulative.

  Regular exposure to cleansing & buffer chemicals, blood, fecal waste, and other body fluids with risk of infection.

  Necessity of wearing lead apron and/or lead wrap-around, 70% of the time during invasive cardiac catheterization procedures.

  Work requires regular walking, standing, pushing of equipment, lifting, and positioning of patients.

  Works in semi-dark areas when performing invasive cardiac procedures.
