What you'll do...
This position involves battery modeling research to support the development of current and future hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric vehicles within Ford Research and Advanced Engineering. The mission is to perform research to develop new battery-related features, enhance existing features, and enable lower cost, more reliable, and longer-lived batteries.
Responsibilities:
Develop advanced battery plant models for use in battery design and vehicle system simulations
Identify and prescribe test methods, including novel measurements beyond traditional battery cycling, that can deliver data needed to calibrate or validate multi-physics battery models
Post-process battery cell and pack test data to evaluate performance or life characteristics
Define and lead research projects related to battery management modeling
Implement multi-physics battery models using various modeling tools
Map battery hardware architectures and interfaces between battery cells and the battery controller to simulation environments, while balancing complexity with execution speed
Create reduced order models from highly complex physical plant models for battery management system implementation
Transfer developed technologies to product teams
Basic Qualifications:
Masters in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related degree
3 years of experience with electrochemical battery modeling (Thesis and/or Dissertation allowed)
Strong knowledge in one and good awareness of the other of the following competencies
Batteries and battery systems, especially of the type used in vehicle Electrification
Control Systems, especially state estimation theory
Competency in the use of battery modeling and simulation tools, especially Matlab/Simulink/Stateflow, PyBaMM, C code, COMSOL, TWAICE, GT-Autolion, JuliaSim and Abaqus
Experience with post-processing battery cell and pack data using AVL Concerto or similar programs.
Ability to anticipate research needs and initiate research projects.
Knowledge of model-based development processes desired
Awareness of automotive battery management hardware desired
Excellent data analysis and interpretation capabilities
Excellent teamwork and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related degree
5+ years of experience with electrochemical battery modeling (Thesis and/or Dissertation allowed)
Strong knowledge in one and good awareness of the other of the following competencies
Batteries and battery systems, especially of the type used in vehicle Electrification.
