  Position Summary

  The Department of Sociology and Criminology invites applications for atenure-track Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2024. Areas of specializationare open, but preference will be given to candidates with a strong record ofscholarship and teaching in Law and Inequality.   Essential Functions

  Ability to teach five classes over three quarters per academic yearPublish regularly (in peer-reviewed, scholarly publications)Present research at scholarly conferencesProvide service to the department, College, and University, includingwork on various committees (e.g., the department's Committee of the Whole)Provide students with mentoring and academic advisingContinue and development new scholarly and research interestsMay occasionally supervise additional independent studies or directedresearchKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  Expertise in Law and Inequality

  Excellent communication skills for classroom teaching, student advising,and mentoringExcellent writing skills for publishing research findingsExcellent reasoning ability, given the extent and complexity of a facultymember's roleStrong people skills, along with the ability to work effectively with alltypes of peopleBasic word processing and computer-related skillsAbility to listen and effectively communicate verbally with students,faculty and administrative colleagues, and staffAbility to write extensivelyRequired Qualifications

  ABD in sociology, criminology or related field with expectation thatdegree must be completed by start of appointment.

  Prior experience as the instructor on record in at least three in-personhigher education courses preferred as well as evidence of the ability topublish.The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to orexperience working with diverse populations.Preferred Qualifications

  PhD in sociology, criminology or related field at time of application.Working Environment

  Standard office environment.

  Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.Noise level is quiet to moderate.Physical Activities

  Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.

  Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capabilityof transporting objects up to 20 lbs.Work ScheduleWhile the Un versity's administrative offices are open Monday - Friday,8:00 am - 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and arebased on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. TheUniversity's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website(the law school is on a semester system and has a different academiccalendar).
