Do you enjoy working with people in a fun, fast-paced and enriching environment? Bellingham Parks & Recreation is seeking enthusiastic, creative and energetic leaders to join our Community Recreation team.
Positions in the Recreation Instructor classification perform a variety of duties in general recreation areas including class instruction, trip planning and leading, special events support, monitoring and performing light maintenance of facilities, and general administrative support. Assists in program development, training and leading lower classified staff as well.
The current vacancy will assist the Community Recreation Division. Initial interviews are tentatively scheduled for early February. The schedule will vary based upon program needs and the time of year and will include some weekends, early mornings and/or evening hours. This position will begin working part time (69 hours per month) and then increase to full time (40 hours per week) May - August.
In a (RNB) regular non-benefit position with the City of Bellingham, employees are allowed to work up to 69 hours per month and will flex up to full time four months a year. A paid 90-minute onboarding session must be attended prior to start date.
City of Bellingham employees receive access to our employee assistance program. This position is not eligible for benefits, except as required by law. Employees are eligible to accrue 1 hour of Washington State paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked.
This position becomes represented by the Local 1937 bargaining unit after the completion of 1040 hours working an average of at least 12 hours per week, on an annual basis. When union-eligible, employees will receive paid holidays per the holiday schedule during their employment period.
This position is open until filled. Initial review will begin February 1, 2024.
Starting wage is at Step 1 - $18.21 hour. The full 2023 range for this position is $18.21 / hour - $21.70 / hour - Salary Grade 3, Step 1. Employees receive step increases on completion of 2080 hours in accordance with the Guild of Pacific Northwest Employees, Local 1937 Collective Bargaining Agreement (https://cob.org/about/employment/labor-agreements-pay-schedule) and City policy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Participates in planning, promoting, implementing, leading and instructing recreation programs and activities in the areas of community events, specialized recreation, athletics, aquatics and general programs.
Ensures a safe environment for all participants and staff by enforcing Parks and Recreation policies, procedures and specific regulations of assigned area.
Procures supplies for assigned classes.
Maintains statistics of assigned programs, performs data entry and produces associated reports.
Staffs assigned facilities during public and rental periods; monitors program activity within facility or designated park space.
Performs setup and take down of activities, supplies and equipment; maintains facilities in accordance with departmental standards and procedures.
Assists in training, scheduling, leading and evaluating lower classified staff involved in assigned area.
Provides support for special events and programs.
Provides general program information to recreation staff and participants.
ADDITIONAL WORK PERFORMED:
Performs other related duties as assigned.WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed year round in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor public facilities and environments, including, but not limited to classrooms, gyms, parks, trails, swimming areas and public attractions. Some assignments may require use of City or private vehicle.
Experience and Training
General Recreation Program (required for the current vacancy):
Minimum of six months experience preparing, teaching and leading recreation activities required.
Demonstrated leadership skills required.
AA degree in Parks and Recreation or related field preferred.
Experience working with people of all ages and abilities preferred.
Necessary Special Requirements
General Recreation Program (required for the current vacancy):
Must possess First Aid and CPR/AED certification at time of hire and maintain currency throughout employment.
Employment contingent upon passing a criminal convictions check and child and adult abuse records check (see Fair Hiring Practices below).
Valid Washington State Driver's License and good driving record as verified by a three-year driving abstract at time of hire.
